| Minesweeper (Web
Master's Note: "MSC") approaching Viet Nam fishing boat
(Bum Boat) while on patrol off North Viet Nam waters. Part of our patrol
consisted of looking for refugees trying to get to South Viet Nam and safety.
The NVA would blow them out of the water. There would be 9 Mine sweeps from
MineDiv. 91, MinRon 9 all operating out of Nam. 3 would be in Subic Bay,
Philippines for fuel and stores. 3 sweeps would be enroute to or from Nam
and 3 would be in Viet Nam. 2 would be on patrol and 1 would be anchored
in Danang. Normal tour was 90 days. Our squadron did two tours in Nam. While
the Endurance was on patrol duty, we were watching a movie on the fan tail
when GQ was sounded; I was operating the movie projector at the time. As
I left the fantail for the foreword engine room I saw boat hooks coming
over the side and they were trying to board us. We only had a 40 MM bow
mount and small arms at this time. They did repel the boarders. That was
all I can attest to as I was in the forward engine room on GQ. |

The ships cook!
This man was great! We would have steak feeds on the fantail. Grills were
made from 50 Gal. drums. The mid watch never went hungry as this man would
stay up and bake donuts and bear claws and have them waiting for the crew.
If he didn't bake there would be cold cuts waiting. ( we had a different
name for cold cuts. ) |

| Returning from
a beach party at Danang, Viet Nam. Small boat was rigged by the Bos'n so
we could pull ourselves to shore and back. As the Electricians were in charge
of the movies two of us would leave the ship every day and show a movie
to the South Vietnamese. We were warned to watch for a tattoo on the upper
left chest area SAT CONG to insure they were not NVA. |
